We should probably show this to all our community managers as part of their training:

Liking Leopard

So, my copy of the new version of Mac OSX called Leopard (or, rather more prosaically, Mac OSX 10.5) arrived yesterday afternoon, at some point before I dragged myself out of my sickbed and into the office. I hesitated for all of about 30 seconds before installing it. (This seems to be the major difference between Mac and PC users right now - PC users are holding off from installing Vista for as long as possible, Mac users get Leopard on their machines the first moment they can).

It too about an hour, once I'd rebooted, I discovered thet the line "add a new Mac to you Mac" isn't just advertsiing puff - it genuinely does feel like a new machine. The visual aesthetic of the new OS is markedly different from previous interations, giving the interface a new, pleasingly solid feel. CoverFlow for documents is just terrific, and Quicklook (whereby you can hit the space bar while selecting a document, and open a detailed preview without having to open the actual application) is shaping up to be one of those "how did I live without it?" features.

And, most importantly, World of Warcraft runs just fine.

All good, so far.

Sojourn in Sunderland

We're up in Sunderland for the weekend, to attend a christening of the son of an old friend of Lorna's. Tonight we're enjoying the hotel and stressing over the rugby…

Portrait of the Blogger as a Young Hack

I've been scanning a random selection of negatives I picked up from Mum's a few weeks back. This is me as a student magazine editor back in 1993…

I was so very young. And unshaven.

Sucky McSuck

1am. Can’t sleep. Not happy.

The meeting with Mum’s oncologist did not go well. How badly it went, we won’t know until she’s had a CT scan.

Just brain dumping so I can sleep.

Too much whirling around the old noggin right now.

Holidays are Good

I'm back from my hols. We stayed in a lovely place:

And walked to some lovely places:

And now I'm back in London, with my batteries recharged and ready to go.

Looks like Autumn

I think the days of driving home in the daylight are done for this year.

Blast from the Past in my RSS

I was rather surprised to see the above picture on the Adam Smith Institute blog… It's my old school, Dollar Academy. The fact that the kid on the left looks much like I did back then doesn't help.

Ironically, the post is about the status of English private schools. And Dollar is very much in Scotland.

Blogathon: the Movie

Today was the RBI Charity Blogathon. Here's a quick bit of movie I grabbed on my phone towards the end of the day:

Horror of My Youth

A while ago, I replaced my few remaining tapes with iTunes downloads to tidy up my music collection a little.

Maybe I shoudl have listened to the tapes before I did so, because I ended up paying for this:

And it's rubbish.

What was I thinking when I was a kid?
