Good morning. Hard at work in my favourite coffee shop.

The Web has become anti-human

Sir Tim Berners-Lee doesn’t mince his words:

“We demonstrated that the Web had failed instead of served humanity, as it was supposed to have done, and failed in many places,” he told me. The increasing centralization of the Web, he says, has “ended up producing—with no deliberate action of the people who designed the platform—a large-scale emergent phenomenon which is anti-human.”

Beer, beer, beer… what?

Note to self: never try to analyse the physics of PAW Patrol.

(But where does the water for Marshall’s backpack water jets come from?)

Now my account is all fixed, I’m really enjoying micro.blog again. Thanks, @manton.

Psychologists have looked into why “phubbing” is so harmful to our social lives - no big surprises, but it confirms what you might guess. It’s the psychological equivalent of refusing to sit at a lunch table with a child.

This piece on making retail businesses into experience centres is actually quite depressing. I was writing about this nearly 20 years ago for Estates Gazette, and people are still struggling with it.

The sheer hell of living here on a day like today… 😇

These boats need some TLC, though.

Down by the coast is the best place to be in this heat.

This looks like a good hire - hopefully Apple’s streaming video offering won’t be US-centric by a year or two in: Apple hires BBC Films veteran for its international development team

My inbox is down to 10% of where I started - at 50 e-mails. Coffee time, and then I start catching up on invoices and diary management.

Ugh. I have unanswered email going back six weeks. I really did lose control of my diary.

Now, can I still post?

OK - about to nuke the newer of the two accounts. Hopefully I’ll still be able to post afterwards…

One micro-blog account, twice. A seemingly irresolvable issue.

I’m a bit at a loss as to what to do with my account here. Due to some weirdness, I’m paying for it twice, once as a blog only account, once as a blog+podcast account.

It’s more than just the cash, though, it’s also the fact that I essentially have two accounts under the same name, each building up their own (separate but overlapping) sets of content.

My tickets to support are going unanswered.

I enjoy micro.blog, but not so much that I’m happy to pay twice for one service, which is what’s happening now. And meanwhile, every time I post, I don’t know which content bucket it’s going to end up in. So the pain of untangling the situation gets worse - and that makes me really reluctant to post.

I suspect my only solution now is to backup both accounts, nuke one of them, and try to figure out which one went, and import that one’s back up.

Wish me luck.

If you ever hear from me again.

Nearly done writing several thousand words for an actual book. How delightlyful old-school, in-depth and focused.

Overheard in my local coffee shop: “Oh, dear, we’re out of avocadoes.”

OMG THE MILLENIALS ARE HERE.
